ROD HONING JIG

The way I made this rod jig was I used a piece of 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" x 1/4" angle. I cut it about 8" long. Then I took a piece of 1" i.d. tubing and cut it about 4" long. Then, Take two pieces of 1-1/2" x 1/4" 2" long flatbar and place on top of the angle at each end (see picture)and then put the tube on top of the flatbar. Then, weld it all together. Measure a place right in the center of the tube that is just larger than the rod main bearing and cut it out. This is where you will set the rod for honing. Now, once you have it all together you set the rod down in the jig, run your hone in from the end (1" 320 grit Flex-Hone). Make sure you lubricate the hone before running in. You need to use a light weight oil or WD-40 to keep from scarring the rod. You will only need to make a few passes at about 1/2 the drill speed to do the job. All you are looking to do is put in a good cross hatch to enhance the oiling of the main bearing.
